USC vs. Cal Bears football game @ the Sierra Lodge

Come watch the USC-vs-Cal game with us at the Sierras!

Summary:

  • leaving Friday night after Bible Study (9:30pm)
  • heading back to Berkeley after the football game, Saturday
  • $35 covers food, lodging, gas, and a ton of fun!
  • (update) packing list is right below
  • Sign up ASAP!

UPDATE (10/1): Since many sisters are stressed out about midterms, this is now a BROS ONLY trip! For those who are staying back in Berkeley, fear not — sisters will have a sleepover in Alameda and Dim Sum + Study on Saturday, while bros will watch the game together. The rest who are going to the Sierras: it will be awesome.

PACKING LIST:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Bible/Notebook for DT
  • Shoes and socks for hike/sports
  • Backpack (to carry lunch on the hike)
  • Hat/visor/sunglasses
  • Long pants
  • Sweater and/or jacket (Warm Jacket for Nighttime)
  • Pajamas (no wearing pajamas in public/general areas)
  • Sunscreen
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Water bottle
  • Towel
  • Flashlight

Come join us this Saturday as we get away from the concrete suburbia to the wonderful woods of the Sierras! The poster above doesn’t do the trip much justice; to be honest, the much anticipated Cal vs. USC football game is just icing on the cake.

We’ll be staying staying at the Lodge and Barn, constructed and built by many people of Gracepoint Berkeley (from Pastor Ed Kang to the staff to many of the students). Not only is it on par with (and similar-looking to) ski resorts, there’s a lot of things you can do on just our property alone:

Play basketball on our own courts, complete with lights

We will be the first group to play on our new football/soccer field!

Hiking / Land Exploration

Much of this trip is to also go hiking and explore the surrounding land. As a EECS grad and now working with computers all day long, the bright blue skies and the vibrant green fields and trees are a welcome change in scenery.

The details

Come visit this post again to find out what to bring and such, but remember to sign up below! In the meantime, I leave you with this video from our last trip to the Sierras (we won’t be kayaking this time around b/c the water will be freezing):

Montara Beach Trip

This past saturday, Kairos went to Montara State Beach! We gathered bright and early at Anna Head Parking Lot to organize rides and soon we were headed over to beautiful Pacific Coast Highway and a day of fun and fellowship (by that time, our Cal Football running back, Jahvid Best had already scored two touchdowns! Go Bears!). When we got there, we needed everyone’s help to move all the food, sports equipment, chairs, and even a grill down to our spot at the beach.

Kairos arrives at Montara Beach!

The day is basically summed up in three words: sports, food, and fellowship. Students and staff alike played the usual beach sports such as volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and football while others played some more unconventional ones such as King Kong Shower. I have to say, playing sports in the sand is a lot more tiring than on grass or at the gym. Playing Ultimate Frisbee in the sand and trying to guard Mike Park made me really tired really fast. Then of course, what would a day at the beach be without food? We had delicious burgers and hot dogs, which tasted even more awesome because we were all hungry from playing sports.

All in all, I think everybody had a lot of fun (and got a lot of exercise)!

I look forward to our next outing! I hear that we might be having a Sierra Lodge trip very soon. Keep on the watch for the announcement! :] See you all at Bible Study!

Kairos Welcome Night 09!

We had the Kairos Welcome Night followed by sports time at the Maxwell family field this past Thursday. It was a night with Hawaiian BBQ, funny videos, skits, a thought-provoking talk, and lastly some friendly sports competitions. It was a ton of fun! For those of you who were there, you know what I am talking about!

So, we began the program  proudly presenting the first-ever KAIROS PRAISE BAND! Thank God for His provision that we had just enough musical talents to put together a full band. It was truly some rocking music that exceeded the expectations of many of us :) And then, there was the video with this senior guy Josh sharing some words of wisdom from his college experiences. But man, what’s with his pink shirt? I sure learned the lesson to never mix my colors with my whites when I do laundry. Thanks for your tips Josh! Oh yeah, also make sure to avoid that stalker girl!

Then comes the highlight of the night: the talk given by Rick. Rick shared about growing up in Hawaii he had always wanted to get off of the island and see the world. When he went to Berkeley for college, he thought that he’d be finally be happy. But there, he found himself seeking one thing after another and yet not satisfied. He pointed out that this “if only I had ___, then I will be happy” mentality is what drives us in our various pursuits in life. Ultimately, we all just want to have a good life! But what’s a good life? Then, he used the mousetrap to demonstrate the point that we must know the purpose of something (what it’s used for) in order to determine whether it’s good or bad. It’s indeed a powerful point, but man, I was so afraid that the mousetrap would catch his fingers during his demonstration!

After the welcome night, we had some crazy actions in handball, ultimate frisbee, and brave heart up at the Maxwell field. The most awesome team, the freshman class, was split into two groups.  And despite their lack of experiences in these games and some competitive brothers on opposing teams, the frosh 1 team fought hard and received the glory of 2nd place! Yeah…some brothers got a little competitive during handball. But it was all for some friendly competition and good fun! We ended the night with boba and a group picture on the field. Check out some pictures from the night and be sure to join us this Friday for the Kairos bible study and some more fun!

Kairos Karnival

Promoted to be the event to top all events, Kairos Karnival was everything anticipated plus more.  Held at Maxwell Family Field, it was a night of fun, games, and some serious fellowship. There was the Three Point Shootout, the Chicken Flip, Football Toss, Nothing But Net, Ultimate Frisbee, and more. One of the favorite activities of the night was the 50 foot Inflatable Obstacle Course, which two people would race through to see if they could record the fastest time. As the night went on, condensation accumulated and people were doing more slipping and sliding rather than actually racing through the obstacle course–but boy was it fun!

If you missed it, we split up into teams of about 10 to go from one carnival booth to the next, so we got to know some new faces as well as compete for the top prizes. Who knew, but at the end of the night we found out that the grand prizes would be an autographed Cal football signed by Jahvid Best and an autographed mini Cal helmet signed by Kevin Riley, some more Cal gear, and of course our very own Kairos Sweatshirt! Needless to say, Kairos Karnival was super AWESOME. So be on the lookout for the next Kairos event, cuz it’ll be packed with just as much fun and excitement, plus a whole lot of Kairos-styled good fellowship!

SF Extravaganza

Two Friday’s ago Kairos decided to go to SF together to enjoy a great night of In’n'Out, Ghirardelli, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Double Doubles were decimated, Ghirardelli earthquakes (8 scoops of ice cream with all the works) were conquered, and clam chowder bowls were chowed down on.

Eat it up! A bunch of the group went off to In ‘n’ Out for some tasty burgers.

Some of the men who were brave enough to conquer the earthquake

This group only took 3 guys!

Here’s some of the sisters just enjoying ice cream

We also checked out the crazy hat store on the wharf. Here’s the hats that some of the people tried out.

Some people looked straight up wacky

Some just normal

Some were serious

Some looked slick

Well, we had a great night.  Join us for our next exciting event!!
