Hope everyone had a refreshing weekend as Cal stomped all over Eastern Washington. Last Friday @ Kairos we had an equally awesome bible study and bowling night at Country Club Bowl in San Rafael. It started off with some rockin’ praise introducing some of our new praise band members.
Here's sophomore Steven Chang on the drums!
Pearlene on the Keyboard
Angel and Catarina on the vocals
After the praise we had the Masks skit.
Steve Kim then gave a rousing message on why we don’t need to put masks on anymore. He interviewed some of the upperclassmen and asked them what masks they put on. He concluded with the fact that our search for significance is over because God already knows us!
Well, after that Bible study we headed over the San Rafael bridge (or at least most of us…) for an awesome bowling night. 2 hours of action packed fun with A2f Bowling right next to us. I believe the high score of the night was Andy Tung with 208. I heard there were a few turkeys (3 strikes in a row) that night as in the lane right next to mine, our very own junior Stephen Chee bowled an awesome turkey. Anyways, here’s a few more pictures of the night! Don’t forget to join us next week at 112 Wurster for our weekly Kairos Bible Study!!
We had the Kairos Welcome Night followed by sports time at the Maxwell family field this past Thursday. It was a night with Hawaiian BBQ, funny videos, skits, a thought-provoking talk, and lastly some friendly sports competitions. It was a ton of fun! For those of you who were there, you know what I am talking about!
So, we began the program proudly presenting the first-ever KAIROS PRAISE BAND! Thank God for His provision that we had just enough musical talents to put together a full band. It was truly some rocking music that exceeded the expectations of many of us And then, there was the video with this senior guy Josh sharing some words of wisdom from his college experiences. But man, what’s with his pink shirt? I sure learned the lesson to never mix my colors with my whites when I do laundry. Thanks for your tips Josh! Oh yeah, also make sure to avoid that stalker girl!
Then comes the highlight of the night: the talk given by Rick. Rick shared about growing up in Hawaii he had always wanted to get off of the island and see the world. When he went to Berkeley for college, he thought that he’d be finally be happy. But there, he found himself seeking one thing after another and yet not satisfied. He pointed out that this “if only I had ___, then I will be happy” mentality is what drives us in our various pursuits in life. Ultimately, we all just want to have a good life! But what’s a good life? Then, he used the mousetrap to demonstrate the point that we must know the purpose of something (what it’s used for) in order to determine whether it’s good or bad. It’s indeed a powerful point, but man, I was so afraid that the mousetrap would catch his fingers during his demonstration!
After the welcome night, we had some crazy actions in handball, ultimate frisbee, and brave heart up at the Maxwell field. The most awesome team, the freshman class, was split into two groups. And despite their lack of experiences in these games and some competitive brothers on opposing teams, the frosh 1 team fought hard and received the glory of 2nd place! Yeah…some brothers got a little competitive during handball. But it was all for some friendly competition and good fun! We ended the night with boba and a group picture on the field. Check out some pictures from the night and be sure to join us this Friday for the Kairos bible study and some more fun!
Two Friday’s ago Kairos decided to go to SF together to enjoy a great night of In’n'Out, Ghirardelli, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Double Doubles were decimated, Ghirardelli earthquakes (8 scoops of ice cream with all the works) were conquered, and clam chowder bowls were chowed down on.
Eat it up! A bunch of the group went off to In ‘n’ Out for some tasty burgers.
Some of the men who were brave enough to conquer the earthquake
This group only took 3 guys!
Here’s some of the sisters just enjoying ice cream
We also checked out the crazy hat store on the wharf. Here’s the hats that some of the people tried out.
Some people looked straight up wacky
Some just normal
Some were serious
Some looked slick
Well, we had a great night. Join us for our next exciting event!!
Hey all! Hope you all had a great end to your finals. The new school year is fast approaching and this summer has been pretty exciting in Berkeley for Kairos. This Friday a lot of things happened. We started with a Bible study from Pastor Ed about Pharaoh, his truth hating ways, and how that led to some devastating consequences. So a reminder to everyone, don’t be a Pharaoh! Also, at the end of Bible Study we prayed for one of our Kairos Staff, Brian, who is going to be serving at GFC Austin. He’s going to be pursuing his Ph.D. in Chemistry. I’ve personally known Brian since we were freshman at Cal and though it’s sad he’s leaving Berkeley and we’re all gonna miss his awesome presence, I’m also excited to see how God is going to use Brian over there. So Brian… so long for now, but we’ll all be in touch!
Here’s a picture of our former smallgroup along with Judge (who also left for GFC Austin to serve over there while pursuing a Ph.D.)
After Bible study all the Kairos homegroups decided to go to Northloop for a worknight. However, before we started we bumped into Element and the Kairos staff led by Andy Tung challenged the Element staff and students in b-ball. It was a 4 on 4 game up to five points. Before the game Andy Tung confidently claimed to have never lost a basketball game to high school students. Here are the results of the game in the form of a couple video clips I managed to capture.
After that rousing game we were all pumped up and started preparing for some of our welcome week events. Some people were making posters, creating videos, creating brochures, and much much more.
Also, this year Kairos is planning a welcome week event that has never been done before and it’s gonna be awesome… so if you wanna know what it is show up during welcome week =) That’s all for now, stay tuned for the next post.Read the rest of this entry »
This past June, I and a few other Gracepoint folks had the opportunity to go to Honduras on a medical mission trip with Baptist Mission & Dental Mission International (BMDMI). We went to Erandique, a small village of a few hundred people in western Honduras. The first day we arrived in the village, we set up shop in various parts of the village to offer a variety of services: Medical Clinic, Dental Clinic, Optometry Clinic, Pharmacy, Vet Clinic, Children’s Church, and Evangelism services. I was part of the Medical Clinic, which saw in total over 3,000 people, and we spent the week diagnosing common illnesses like allergies and fungal infections to even life-threatening ones like pneumonia and cerebral palsy. People who needed more prolonged or specialized care were referred to the Project Life program, where they were sponsored to receive treatments like surgical hernia repairs for only $50 US.
Most exciting of all, over 400 men, women and children accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior during the time we were there. Praise the Lord! Even though most of them lived in poverty, they saw the value of living a life devoted to God. The whole team was just amazed at how God worked in the lives of the Honduran people there, and we felt honored to play a small part in their salvation decisions. The trip was a real eye-opener as well, as we were away from the distractions of modern US life, and singularly focused on spending over 12 hours a day serving God and others. This was a trip I won’t soon forget, and I highly recommend going on a mission trip if you ever get the chance!
Join us (Rick/Sue & Andy/Amy’s Group) after Bible Study this Friday on our Hike up to the Big “C”! Get into the Cal spirit of things on this 20 minute hike with yummy snacks to celebrate with at the top.
Entering my fourth full year with Kairos Christian Fellowship, I have been blessed with outings to some of Northern California’s most serene and majestic natural wonders, including Yosemite and the Sierra Nevadas. This past July 4th, the opportunity to escape the frantic pace of daily life in Berkeley and San Francisco to pause, take a deep breath, and re-encounter the incredible natural beauty of the Sierra Nevadas, Lake Spaulding, and Lake Faucherie with Kairos was without a doubt one of the highlights of my summer.
One thing I reflected upon during this trip while gazing upon the mountainous panorama of Lake Faucherie was that thesplendor and majesty of Creation touched a deep part of my soul that continually seeks for life as it was genuinely meant to be lived. Surrounded by people who know me better than I know myself at times, as well as other people who I personally strive to understand on a deeper level, we were all able to experience true fellowship in daily being devoted to studying Biblical truths, laughing and working alongside one another, and being awestruck by the grandeur and reality of God’s majestic Creation.
As we have recently listened and observed in the Truth Project by Dr. Del Tackett, in Psalm 19: 1-2 King David writes that “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hand. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.” Lake Faucherie was a snapshot of Creation declaring the glory of God and proclaiming the work of his hand. We are too often blinded by the tunnel vision of needing to accomplish specific tasks or goals for the day and fail to take time to step back and see the grander picture that we are a part of. This is the life as it was truly meant to be lived.
I also wanted to thank the staff for organizing, planning, cooking, driving, and generally stressing over the trip in order to make it enjoyable for us undergrads. The sacrifices made by the staff were what made this trip possible, and they reminded me of how having so many leaders who have gone before me, walking the same path I am now walking, is just one example of God’s faithfulness and blessing in my life.
Above all, just as Apostle Paul exhorts Timothy to “…join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us into a holy life…” (v.8) in our week’s devotional text from 2 Timothy 1, I was reminded of the difficulties of Christian life back home in Berkeley and our need to join in suffering for the gospel. We gleaned a firsthand taste of the true fellowship and freedom that accompanies embracing God’s plan for our lives through our July 4th trip, and it is our responsibility to respond to that calling.
